Plot:
In Nice architect Walter Saccard, unhappily married, is intrigued by the acquittal of Melchior Kimmel, a German bookseller accused of murdering his wife at a bus stop. After compiling relevant newspaper clippings Saccard visits the exonerated Kimmel and is convinced of the German's guilt. Saccard begs his wealthy wife, Clara, for a divorce but, mad with jealousy of his mistress Ellie, she refuses. When Clara takes a bus to visit her sick mother Saccard follows in his car. The next day her corpse is discovered in a ravine and foul play is suspected. Among those certain that Clara was not a suicide and that her husband is responsible are Kimmel, who attempts blackmail, and brutal police detective Corby, who finds the clippings. Certain that Kimmel's acquittal was a travesty of justice, Colby relentlessly stalks both architect and bookseller. Enraged because Saccard's meddling has cast doubts on his exoneration, Kimmel murders the architect.
